The Sierra Club has sued the Dept. of Defense, claiming the Pentagon is trying to halt wind farm construction nationwide. In a suit filed June 28 in federal court in California, the group says DOD failed to complete a congressionally mandated study of windmills’ impact on operations of military radar installations. That study, due May 8, isn’t done yet. The Federal Aviation Administration takes into account DOD concerns about radar impacts when reviewing wind projects. The Sierra Club claims at least 15 wind farm proposals have been stalled due to FAA concerns about projects “within radar line of sight.” FAA is carrying out reviews as usual and “has not put a moratorium on all wind farm projects,” a spokesperson says. DOD officials wouldn’t comment on the lawsuit.
