Former Vice President Al Gore has called on U.S. leaders to commit to producing 100% of the nation’s electricity from renewable sources in 10 years. Gore said on July 17 that hiking renewable-energy use would help end U.S. reliance on foreign oil and mitigate effects of climate change. He said heavy spending is needed to update an “antiquated” electric grid. In 2007, renewables provided 8.5% and nuclear 19.4% of U.S. electricity.
