The State Energy Conservation Office awarded Boerne ISD a $164,000 Renewable Energy Technology Grant. The project is being installed at Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary School and will feature a 42.8-kW solar roof-mounted array consisting of 177 photovoltaic panels that will be oriented to the southeast for enhanced solar-energy generation.
The system is designed to generate 59,101 kWh per year, saving the school more than $5,700 a year in energy expenses, or about 8 % of its electricity bill. By producing renewable energy, the school should prevent 38 tons of CO2 from entering the air annually (or the environmental equivalent of driving 67,115 fewer miles on Texas roadways or powering almost six average Texas homes).
The project is estimated to cost $264,000 for the installation with the balance of the funds provided by City Public Service Energy in San Antonio. The project qualifies for the maximum amount of $100,000 in rebates from CPS Renewable Energy Incentives.
Under a separate grant, Boerne ISD is receiving $25,000 in technical assistance services from SECO under the Schools Energy Management Program. The services are provided by Texas Energy Engineering Services Inc. of Austin under contract to SECO.
TESSI will develop a district-specific energy management plan and provide assistance to incorporate previously identified energy retrofits into a facilities capital improvement master plan being developed by the district.
