The California Transportation Foundation has announced the Transportation Award winners for Project of the Year, Person of the Year, Elected Official of the Year and more for transportation excellence in 2009.

The CTF Transportation Awards recognize excellence in California transportation, all modes, public and private sector and from all regions of the state.

“The TRANNY Awards jury, made up of public and private sector transportation professionals, reviewed many excellent nominations this year,” says Tom Zlotkowski, CTF Transportation Awards Committee Chair. “Our selections represent the best of the projects, programs and people who made a positive difference for California transportation in 2009.”

For Person of the Year, the CTF selected Gary Richards, transportation columnist at the San Jose Mercury News.

CTF’s Elected Official of the Year is Cathleen Galgiani, California State Assembly, 17th District, which includes parts of Merced and San Joaquin counties. Galgiani is an active advocate of the state’s High-Speed Rail project.

For Project of the Year, CTF chose the San Francisco Bay Bridge West Approach (Caltrans District 4 and Caltrans HQ • Tutor-Saliba Corp • BATA • CTC • URS • LAN/AECOM • HNTB).

Rail Project of the Year went to the Donner Pass Railroad Tunnel Clearance Improvements (Union Pacific Railroad • Shannon & Wilson • McGuire and Hester • Drill Tech Drilling).

Structure Project of the Year went to Confusion Hill Bridge on U.S. 101 in Mendocino County (Caltrans District 1 and Caltrans Engineering Services • MCM Construction • Parsons • FHWA).

Pedestrian/Bicycle Project of the Year finalists include the Mary Avenue Bridge (City of Cupertino • HNTB • Swinerton Management • Golden State Bridge • Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority).

Freeway/Interstate Project of the Year finalists include the I-205 Widening project (Caltrans District 10 • O.C. Jones & Sons • San Joaquin COG • C.C. Myers, Inc.).

Environmental Enhancement Project of the Year finalists include Skaggs Island (Caltrans District 4 • US Navy • US Fish and Wildlife Service • BCDC • BATA).

Local Street Project of the Year finalists include Crown Valley Parkway Widening (Mission Viejo • RBF • All American Asphalt).

Interchange Project of the Year finalists include the I-238 Widening project near San Leandro (Flatiron • ACTIA • Caltrans District 4).

Operational Efficiency Project of the Year finalists include Southern California Ports Emergency Messaging System (Port of Long Beach • Port of Los Angeles • Dept. of Homeland Security • City of Long Beach • City of Los Angeles • Caltrans District 7 • LA METRO).

Conventional Highway Project of the Year finalists include the SR 12 Truck Climbing Lanes project (Caltrans District 4 • Ghilotti Construction Co.).

Public Outreach Program of the Year finalists include the SR 46 Corridor Study (Caltrans District 5 • City of Paso Robles • San Luis Obispo COG • San Luis Obispo Co. • MIG, Inc.).

The California Transportation Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded 22 years ago to support California’s transportation community.
