Dutch engineers have successfully placed a 50-meter-long, 20-m-wide tidal-power device into one of the openings of the North Sea-facing Eastern Scheld storm barrier. Including five turbines that are together rated at 1.2 MW, the system comprises the world’s largest array of free-flow, bi-directional turbines for commercial use, according to its developer, Tocardo International B.V.

Project co-investor Huisman Equipment B.V. built the turbines’ support structure, and Strukton Rail B.V. managed the installation, which took place Sept. 24. Tocardo declined to disclose the cost of the project, which was co-funded by the European Union as well as central and local government bodies in the Netherlands.
