Government/Public Building, Award of Merit: San Bernardino Justice Center, San Bernardino
Consolidating functions that previously were performed in 12 buildings countywide, the $260-million San Bernardino Justice Center has become one of the Inland Empire's most significant facilities in recent years. The building team targeted a minimum LEED-Gold certification for the project, which includes 35 courtrooms, two hearing rooms, offices, security operations, a holding area and a secure sally port for transporting detainees. Located close to the San Jacinto, San Andreas and other earthquake faults, the mid-rise structure is the first new courthouse in the state with a base-isolated foundation. Due to its complexities, the project required 62,000 inspections. Internet-enabled tablets allowed the team to track the inspections in real time.
