The City of Pompano Beach and Kaufman Lynn Construction broke ground today at McNair Recreational Center as the extensive renovation work begins at this important community facility. Upgrades will include a synthetic turf field with lighting and a new 5,000-square-foot clubhouse with bathrooms, a concession area and a fitness center with yoga studio. Kaufman Lynn will also be installing new bleachers and a new scoreboard; constructing a new playground; and resurfacing the basketball courts.

Georgia Gwinnett College newly redesigned welcome center, courtesy of its collaboration with CROFT & Associates. CROFT and its team of architects and engineers began work on the project in 2018 and shepherded it through construction and completion. The 9,100 square-foot space will now serve as the first point of contact for prospective students, parents and visitors, hosting activities including student orientation, campus tours and college information sessions.

FRONTIER Building provided the ground-up construction, interior build-out and landscaping for the new 2,968 square-foot restaurant. Built on a 46,223 square-foot lot, the project also included a drive-thru, 65 parking spaces and four bicycle spots.

Kaufman Lynn Construction broke ground for the Trenton Mill Lofts, located at 612 West Main Avenue in the heart of Gastonia’s FUSE District. Trenton Mill Lofts will serve the rising number of North Carolinians choosing to live in smaller cities like Gastonia, considered a vital corridor for commuters to the Charlotte metropolitan area. The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority moves forward connecting communities with the construction of the new Selmon West Extension bridge in Tampa, Florida. This 1.9-mile toll road will serve as a faster route from the LeRoy Selmon Expressway across the Gandy Bridge without hitting a traffic light. The segmental bridge sits 30 feet above the Gandy Boulevard/US 92 corridor just east of the Gandy Bridge to Dale Mabry Highway and the LeRoy Selmon Expressway.

The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority is driving Tampa, Florida forward. Since 2018, construction crews have been working continuously on the Selmon West Extension bridge. The 1.9-mile toll road will serve as a jump queue from the LeRoy Selmon Expressway to the Gandy Bridge without hitting a single traffic light. The segmental bridge will complete the link between the LeRoy Selmon Expressway and the construction overpasses in Pinellas County that will link I-275 and the Gandy Bridge.

Global integrated design firm Stantec celebrates the completion of the five-story 17 West, a mixed-use development that includes Miami Beach’s first Trader Joe’s grocery store. Located on 17th Street between Alton Road and West Avenue in Miami Beach, the 185,388 square foot development features 23 units, a rooftop pool deck, commercial space, and a public garage with 193 parking spaces. Stantec was the architect of record for the development and the interior designer for the common areas.

Since the Summer of 2019, structures crews have been busily working on the critical path for the Transform 285/400 Project. The biggest component of the critical path is Bridge 21. The bridge is approximately 2,500 feet long and about 85-feet above SR 400. It will allow motorists to travel from SR 400 southbound south of Hammond Drive to I-285 eastbound ending just east of Peachtree Dunwoody Road. Bridge 21 will replace the outdated clover-leaf system to meet the traffic demands in Atlanta.

Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Roger B. Kennedy Construction broke ground in June for The Avenue on Oakland apartments under a $47 million contract with UNICORP National Developments, Inc., Orlando. Marking Kennedy’s fifth major project for UNICORP, the upscale 342-unit complex will be located at 17210 Oakland Avenue in Oakland, Fla., west of Orlando, and will include four four-story apartment buildings plus site amenities. The 16-acre project is slated for completion in December 2021.

FRONTIER Building has completed the new Wawa convenience store and gas station located at 530 NE 167th Street in North Miami Beach. The new 6,119 square foot outpost is located on a corner lot which formerly housed a Krispy Kreme. This is the second Wawa FRONTIER has built in Miami. The experience-focused national general construction, construction management, and design-build contractor is also responsible for the Wawa on Southwest 24th Street, which opened to the public last year.

The Sarasota Museum of Art was transformed from Sarasota High School built in the 1920s. The design team selected YKK AP America’s YOW 225 TUH thermally broken window system which included insulating, laminated low-E units from Oldcastle Building Envelope. YKK AP customized their window system design with unique trim, mutins and other details to replicate the image of the original wood-framed windows.

Harper-Archer Elementary reopened following a $10.715 million renovation by JE Dunn Construction. Upgrading the building covered about 140,000 square feet and included reconfigurations of select classrooms to support instructional programs which include 21st century and STEM instruction, select upgrades to interior finishes, modifications to HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, and improvements including new storefront windows, painted façade, and signage. The new 104,000-square-foot, three-story aerospace and engineering elementary school features a main entry/lobby space with a gallery, media center, gymnasium with stage, specialty classrooms, STEM and flight simulator labs. Global design and engineering firm Stantec celebrated the groundbreaking of the eight-story,174-room AC Hotel by Marriott Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise, Florida, located on the grounds of the popular Sawgrass Mills. Developed by Norwich Partners, Stantec is the project architect, structural and MEP engineer of record. The hotel will be the first new hotel to be built in Sunrise in 15 years and the first AC Hotel brand in Broward County. It's scheduled for completion in 2020.

The Miami-based builder provided ground-up construction of the 2,800 sf financial center, as well as site-construction & parking for the 19,316 sf lot. The bank features a custom drive-thru with pneumatic tube system & 11 parking spaces. Synovus took over as the new tenant mid-construction which required FRONTIER to work around design updates while striving to deliver the project in time and under budget.

IBT of Miami announced its parent company, Eurofinsa, will build a $129.9 million five-mile avenue with three bridges in Asunción, Paraguay, that will link the country’s capital with the nearby city of Lambaré, at right. A 32-foot-wide landscaped promenade will grace the middle of the four-lane avenue situated along the banks of the Paraguay River. The contract calls for a turnkey project that includes financing, design and construction.

Orlando-based Roger B. Kennedy Construction completed Unicorp National Developments’ Griffin Farm at Midtown town center, including Drake Midtown Apartments, in Lake Mary, Fla. Kennedy built the two five-story apartment buildings valued in excess of $65 million and totaling 263 units, plus the seven single-story retail shell buildings. The Kennedy organization has been in continuous operation as a family-owned construction business for 149 years, and opened its Florida office in Orlando in 1972.

The Birmingham Zoo's Arrival Experience and Welcome Plaza represents Phase 2 of the $18.6 million Renew the Zoo Capital Campaign. Designed by Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, the project features a new two-story building, restrooms, two plazas, outdoor classroom, natural play areas and event lawn. The entry plaza allows room for queuing and ticketing before passing through the entry gates under the new main building's large canopy, featuring a gift shop, administrative offices and education center.

Past the gates, the large plaza provides plenty of gathering space for families and groups, with seating walls and a view into the zoo exhibits from the elevated plaza. The event lawn and green park area replaced two ponds and former fish hatcheries near the front entrance and provides a venue for Zoo events, as well as gatherings for festivals, performances and celebrations.

FRONTIER Building has completed the construction of the new 3,576 square foot restaurant that now includes a drive-thru and eleven parking spaces. The new structure features an updated store design and will also serve as a distribution center.

AVX Corporation partnered with Hannah Solar on a 907-kW solar canopy project for its global headquarters in Fountain Inn, SC. The 10-canopy system is the largest in the state of SC and serves as the on-site electrical generation for AVX as well as covered parking for their employees. The array was installed in conjunction with Duke Energy’s Solar Rebate Program in South Carolina. Hannah Solar was the design-build contractor and utilized the Quadpod double cantilever system from Quest Renewables.

FRONTIER Building recently completed its first Cumberland Farms in Titusville, Florida. One of the brand’s new concept stores, the gas and convenience store is located at 2 N. Hopkins Avenue. After breaking ground in March of this year, Titusville was faced with one of the rainiest seasons of the year. Despite unfavorable weather conditions, FRONTIER Building worked relentlessly to complete the project in just four months. The result is a beautifully built 6,000 square-foot structure.

The project consisted of the construction of a new state-of-the-art, 17,000-sf child development center, complete with parking lot, sidewalks, playground equipment, reception areas, art/enrichment rooms, “movement” rooms, classrooms, and administrative spaces. Moss Construction recently broke ground on a $35 million contract to build the Brickell World Plaza, Phase 2 expansion as part of a multi-phase project located on the 600 block of Brickell Avenue in Miami Florida. The project consists of a thirteen-level garage structure that will contain approximately 478 parking spaces located between the basement and eleventh levels. The garage will also have a tenant restaurant space on the first level. The project is scheduled for completion late 2019.

Dominion Builders was awarded a $1.5 million contract to renovate The Pankey Institute, a non-profit educational organization, dedicated to providing continuing education to practicing dental professionals. The renovation includes a complete revamp of the second-floor conference center, dental training facility, laboratory and x-ray areas. The third floor will be built-out to include 21 private rooms for visiting dental trainees. The renovation is slated for completion in February 2018.

Orlando-based Roger B. Kennedy Construction broke ground for Griffin Farm at Midtown town center buildings A&B, Lake Mary, Fla., under a contract with Unicorp National Developments, Orlando. Zyscovich Architects, Winter Park, designed the town center which is slated to contain 150,000 square feet. As the initial portion of the project’s first phase, Buildings A&B will consist of 13,896 square feet with a contract value of approximately $3 million. Completion is slated for November 2017.

Orlando-based Roger B. Kennedy Construction broke ground for Westgate Lakes Resort & Spa’s $20 million Building 60 in Orlando, under its newest contract with Westgate Resorts, Ltd., Orlando. Company president Roger B. Kennedy, Jr., said the work includes an eight-story, 80-unit timeshare building designed by General Design Architecture, Branson, Mo., and associated site work designed by Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., Orlando. Building 60 is slated for completion in September 2018.

The 5-story, 168,000-square-foot tower includes a 20-bed floor for labor/delivery and women's services; a 24-bed floor for intensive care; two 24-bed floors for general medical services; and ground-floor offices, cafeteria, chapel, and courtyard. Also included were a central energy plant and 160-space parking lot. LEED Silver certification is pending.

An April 18 groundbreaking was held for Seminole County (Fla.) Public Schools’ newest 21st century school ‒ the $43.5 million Millennium Middle School in Sanford designed by SchenkelShultz Architecture, Orlando. Designed with a focus on the performing arts, the 221,741 square foot facility will house 1,900 students. Dominion Builders is proud to announce the completion of an expansion to the Dadeland Executive Center. The project features a new 20-foot high grand lobby entrance with a clear-anodized, glass-infused curtain wall and cantilevered concrete porte-cochere. The interior finishes include white, hand-carved Himalaya stone throughout the first-floor public space, with custom wood wall panels. The renovation also includes a colossal light fixture hanging from the two-story ceiling.
