The ENR regional editors have selected two companies as 2023 Contractor of the Year in the Mountain States region: Staker Parson Materials and Construction, Ogden, Utah, for the Intermountain area; and Flatiron Construction of Broomfield, Colo., for Colorado, Wyoming and the Dakotas. Firms of the Year winners are selected based on multiple criteria, including revenue growth, community impact and other considerations.

Flatiron Construction

Flatiron grew its regional revenues by 30% in 2022 and is leveraging emerging technology to deliver projects. In the last few years, the contractor has seen growth in its adoption of drone technology and Virtual Design and Construction processes, taking and making 3D models of its work at all opportunities to improve work processes, says the company. Flatiron is also an active member of the City and County of Denver small business mentorship program. Flatiron reports 2022 revenue of $184 million, up from $141 million the previous year.

Last year Flatiron was ranked No. 30 on the ENR Mountain States Top Contractors list.

Staker Parson Materials and Construction

Staker Parson’s regional revenue grew by 16% in 2022, fueled in part by the contractor’s biggest project, the West Davis Corridor, a new highway running through Davis County in Utah. The firm received a Perfect Record Award from the Utah Safety Council last year. Other recognition included AGC’s Rural Highway Project of the Year and Utah Dept. of Transportation Contractor of the Year. Staker Parson recently launched a campaign in conjunction with LiveOn Utah to promote suicide prevention. The contractor wrapped 26 concrete mixer trucks with messaging to help prevent suicide. This included the new 988 suicide hotline number and the LiveOn logo. Staker Parson is reporting 2022 revenue of $574 million for the construction portion of its business, up from $493 million the previous year.

 Key Intermountain projects include:
