Kitchell tapped to build new $165-million University of Arizona academic building
The University of Arizona selected Kitchell to build its new Health Sciences Innovation building located at Mabel Street and Warner Avenue Mall in Tucson, Ariz. The 10-story, 227,000-sq-ft building will working space for a variety of health professionals and students and faculty from medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health.
 
“We’re thrilled to partner with the U of A in creating this interdisciplinary facility,” says Kitchell Vice President and Team Leader Russ Korcuska in a company press release. “Our experience in healthcare, higher education and focus on prefabrication will be tremendous assets to this project.”
 
The project team expects to complete the building prior to the 2018 fall semester. Pre-construction activities will begin in March 2017, and site mobilization, demolition and utility and foundation work will start in June.
 
University of Arizona selected CO Architects as project designer and Tucson-based Swaim Associates Architects will also work on the project.
 
Arizona State University opens $129 million law school facility
Arizona State University unveiled the $129 million, 280,000 sq ft Beus Center for Law and Society in mid-August. The state-of-the-art facility will house the university’s Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law and features several high-tech upgrades over the school’s previous home.
 
These features include 18 classrooms outfitted with collaborative technology and an Executive Conference Room with two curved projection screens. The center’s multi-use W. P. Carey Foundation Armstrong Great Hall has retractable seating a motorized front wall and can function as a lounge area, a 150-seat lecture hall, an Appellate courtroom or an indoor/outdoor auditorium with room for 800 people.
 
Tomas Rossant of New York-based Ennead Architects and Phoenix-based Jones Studio designed the project. JBA Consulting Engineers provided technology designs for the project. DPR Construction was the construction manager.
 
Sundt-Yates breaks ground on Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino expansion
An expansion of Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, located near Maricopa, Ariz., began in early August. The multi-million dollar expansion will provide the casino with greater capacity to house guests and host large-scale events.
 
The Ak-Chin Indian Community and Sundt-Yates are undertaking the project, which will add 200 guest rooms, a parking garage, a ballroom, a conference center, a spa and restaurants to the casino. Sundt-Yates is a joint venture between Sundt Construction and Yates Construction.
 
“Economic development projects for Indian Communities are some of the most impactful projects we build,” says Sundt Project Director Chandra Reilly in a company press release. “This project has demanded the best ideas out of everyone involved, and we look forward to bringing those ideas to life over the next two years.”

PENTA Building Group expands internship program
PENTA Building Group recently expanded its summer internship program to 19 interns. The program, which allows high school and college students to gain professional experience in the construction industry, now includes an internship slot in the marketing department as well.
 
"PENTA's internship program was developed to expand upon what students are learning in the classroom and applying that knowledge to real world experiences," says Jennifer Leaders, PENTA’s Human Resources manager, in a press release. "Expanding our program not only provides a one-of-a-kind educational experience to students who make the program, but also benefits the construction industry overall by preparing these young adults for futures beyond the classroom.”
 
PENTA has a presence throughout the Southwest and in California. Its internship program takes place from May to August every year and gives students access to professionals on active job sites and teaches skills like reading construction plans, scheduling tasks and implementing safety measures. Interns also participate in team building activities such as a kickball game between interns and executives.
 
Out of town interns have access to the fully-furnished corporate apartments. PENTA has hired 25 former interns.
 
ENR Award of Excellence winner coming to Arizona State University
Arizona State University’s Wrigley Lecture Series will feature ENR Award of Excellence winner Jason F. McLennan on Sept. 20. McLennan, an advocate of the green building movement, will make a presentation entitled “A Living Future: How We’ll Live and Work in the Communities of the Future”.
 
McLennan will discuss topics that include energy, transportation, water and waste while focusing on the world’s green buildings, case studies and other stories from his career. University Sustainability Practices and Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family co-sponsored the event.
 
The event takes place in the Lakefront Room at the Tempe Center for the Arts, 700 W. Rio Salado Pkwy., Tempe, AZ, 85281. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the talk begins at 6 p.m. with a dessert reception to follow. University of Arizona Cancer Center wins DBIA award
The Design Build Institute of America announced Design-Build Project/Team Award Winners in July and the University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in downtown Phoenix took home an award for healthcare facilities.
 
Hensel Phelps Construction Co. was the general contract on the 220,000 sq ft project and ZGF Architects LLP was the architect. The $88 million project took two years to build.
 
Annual ABA Convention to take place in Sedona
The Arizona Builders Alliance will host its 2016 Convention at the Poco Diablo Resort in Sedona, Ariz., Oct. 26 to 28. The event, entitled “Meeting of Stars Hollywood,” will feature educational and networking opportunities for construction professionals in Arizona.
