With its workforce now peaking at around 30,000, the U.K.'s London-Birmingham 140-mile HS2 high speed railroad is shifting into the fit-out stage with more than $6 billion of track and system work being readied for procurement.
Grants from the Federal Railroad Administration will fund high-speed passenger rail projects from North Carolina and Virginia to California and Nevada.
The grant awards include $3.1 billion for the California High-Speed Rail Authority and $3 billion for the Brightline West linking Southern California to Las Vegas.
The carrier said it is working with private rail developer Texas Central Partners to seek federal funds to further determine viability of reviving the stalled project.
But the megaproject's current chances of successful delivery was rated "unachievable" by the government's Infrastructure and
Projects Authority in its recent annual review.
