Building a state-of-the-art children’s museum and science center in El Paso’s downtown arts district required overcoming a challenging site and realizing a complex design.
The museum’s community-led design spotlights local industries such as design, construction, aviation, health care, AI, engineering, music and astronomy, among others.
This 77,000-sq-ft, $72-million project is located next to an underground Union Pacific railway. To ensure safety on both sides, the team maintained a 25-ft safety buffer between the project and nearest railway, installed crack and tilt monitors at an existing retaining wall and placed additional monitors in temporary shoring.
To house each of the museum’s specialties, the building features large open spaces that required a structural design consisting of large section members and complex node connections.
Local subcontractor teams installed key elements such as custom cabinetry work made of natural white oak; curved glass; and wood guardrails around a curved atrium space.
Crews also installed the largest double-pane window panels that the glazing manufacturer could produce.
