Coming Soon in ENR: More of the Project Stories You Love

With project management key to the work of many ENR and ENR.com readers, stories that detail how industry teams plan and execute their projects are obviously popular. In recent weeks, two project features have risen to the top of the most-viewed story statistics for ENR.com.
One feature shared detail about approach roads being built in Indiana and Kentucky for an Ohio River crossing of Interstate 69. Written by Midwest Editor Annemarie Mannion, the $1.6-billion design-build operation is part of a national strategy to develop an interstate freight corridor that connects Canada and Mexico to the Midwest U.S.

So far, the more complicated project work occurred on the Indiana side, where crews are constructing I-69’s southbound lanes to provide all-weather access to the river, making it possible to construct the crossing. Work involves construction of the I-69 southbound span over the Ohio River and Eagle Creek floodplains, plus embankment islands on each end. The story details work challenges at a site with liquefied soils that have flooded twice since the project began in 2023.
Mannion, who formerly reported on suburban developments while working at the Chicago Tribune, speculates that interest in the bridge approach story spiked because U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently visited the Kentucky-side of the approach project. “That may have driven people to look for information,” she says.
Another project feature gaining attention on ENR.com and on ENR’s LinkedIn page focuses on the $866-million Miami Signature Bridge project. One project team member told Managing Editor Scott Judy it was the most complex design-build segmental bridge in the world. With spidery arches in view of Biscayne Bay, the structure is clearly hard to miss.
Judy visited the site to talk with representatives of its design and construction team. During a two-hour tour, he gained details of the painstaking process to complete the segments and the surrounding highway that has forced two completion date extensions in two years. “There was more that I learned than I could fit into the feature,” he says.
