With the world’s busiest airport facing additional capacity needs, this project provided five new domestic gates to the north end of Concourse T at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Before extending the concourse, the team completed an extensive enabling package that included rerouting North Terminal Parkway through the north economy parking lots and rerouting the main Georgia Power ductbank and fiber communication network to align with the new roadways. The team also rebuilt and upgraded the north entry and exit toll plazas, along with a new drop-off and pickup area within the redesigned parking lots.
The building’s main design feature is a roof pop-up, dubbed the Oculus. This oval-shaped portion of the roof has an angle of roughly 20 degrees from one side to the other, which caused multiple coordination issues with the structure, the skin and the MEP trades. The ceiling system also had to adhere to new airport standards.
