Danish renewable energy firm Orsted, a major offshore wind developer, said Nov. 13 it has started construction on a 460- MW utility scale solar project with 40 MW of battery storage in Anderson County, Texas. The Permian Energy Center, on 3,600 acres next to traditional oil and gas installations, will come on line in 2021. It will include 1.3 million solar panels. Orsted is developing a broad portfolio of renewable energy projects in the U.S., including 1 GW of onshore wind. It currently has the only operating domestic offshore wind farm, the 30-MW Block Island project. It also has contracts to provide power to New England from proposed offshore wind farms.
