Biomerics is a Salt Lake City-based biomedical company that’s experiencing rapid growth. It has added nearly 1,000 employees across its operations in four states and Costa Rica in the last two years. Essentially out of room and housed in an inadequate space, the company embarked on a search for land to build a new headquarters. Instead, it made the decision to expand and renovate a long-vacant industrial building. With a need to house both research and manufacturing space in the new facility, the project team developed a plan to give new life to the old building. That involved a full gut and remodel, along with the addition of a lobby, a showroom, offices and meeting spaces.

The 85,000-sq-ft facility also includes amenities for staff, such as a game room and fitness area, along with a large break area and lounge. The design had to be flexible because the company was consolidating several existing and new departments into one facility.

A high priority was placed on creating the lobby, since it offered an opportunity to highlight the technology and innovation that are part of the company’s brand. The design team blended colorful branded accents together to create interest and excitement for clients, current employees and prospective ones.

The old facility had been vacant for several years with little to no maintenance, so the project required extensive demolition. The team also had to convert existing warehouse and manufacturing space into biomedical clean rooms and labs, adhering to stringent guidelines for temperature, cleanliness and quality. New systems include energy-efficient lighting and electrical components, along with state-of-the-art mechanical systems to ensure precise climate controls throughout the many spaces. The team worked through the challenges of a complete renovation to deliver the project in only 18 months.
