The Memorial Sloan Kettering Bergen Cancer Center transformed a 50-year-old steel-frame office building into a 140,000-sq-ft cancer diagnostic and treatment center—with extensive upgrades to support high-end X-ray and imaging equipment, two linear accelerators, and an array of exam, infusion and treatment suites.

The light-duty office building in Montvale, N.J., first required structural reinforcement to support the new medical devices, protective lead shielding and rooftop air handling equipment, with the team upgrading nearly all columns, beams and seated connections to handle new live and dead loads and adding lateral bracing systems throughout the building.

Those efforts required extensive study of the existing structural system—slab thickness, concrete strength and footing size and depth, among other elements, all of which were not available prior to the start of the project.

The LEED Silver design for the facility also highlights modern care priorities including clear patient navigation, extensive daylight exposure, high efficiency,  low VOC ratings and the use of recycled materials.
