Minnesota Twin Metals Minnesota LLC is planning to construct a platinum-group metals (copper, nickel, platinum) underground mine and mineral processing facility. A site west of the Maturi Deposit, near the Ely Airport, is being considered for the concentrator, mine access and other mine-related facilities. Underground corridors will connect facilities to the underground mine. The Dunka Pit, an old mining site, is being proposed as the water source for the project. The pit would encompass brownfield redevelopment, with updated environmental management, and be regulated by the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources and the Pollution Control Agency. Half of the tailings would be returned to the underground mine as backfill, and the other half percent would be stored in a regulated surface facility.
