Despite being hemmed in on all sides by a tight downtown Atlanta site, contractors leading construction of the 94,000-sq-ft, three-story College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-Fil-A Fan Experience executed their plan to finish 24 days ahead of schedule—with zero OSHA recordable incidents. The task facing the project team was evident to this year’s judges, with one noting the “extreme amount of challenges to overcome—more than any team would normally ever encounter.”
Construction types included auger-cast piles and structural slab-on-grade foundations; a mixture of 484 tons of structural steel and cast-in-place concrete frame; and a skin comprising metal panels, glass, masonry, exterior insulation finishing system panels and precast concrete. Interior construction highlights include an 80-ft-tall football-shaped rotunda and a 45-yd by 30-yd indoor turf field featuring an HD video board hovering over it, topped by a fabric roof that required additional safety training for installation.
The site—bounded by busy streets, railroad tracks and a hotel—was a major hurdle. At the start of construction, a street that ran through the site was shut down, but not before a new street could be opened to provide commuter access to nearby conference centers and sports facilities. The contractor achieved 96% local participation and 39% MBE, exceeding the owner’s goal.
