The Federation of American Scientists (FAS), with an industry advisory panel assembled by the Charles Pankow Foundation and the Architectural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Construction Engineers, will test the use of cementitious structural insulated panels in six to eight-story buildings. CSIPs use cement board facings in place of oriented strand board to improve strength, fire resistance and protection from mold. The project will use computer simulations and physical tests to create a design portfolio of optimal CSIP construction. Information about the FAS project is at www.fas.org/housing.
