The House water resources and environment subcommittee has slated an April 6 hearing on a bill that would require the Corps of Engineers to compile the first national inventory of levees. The bill, which subcommittee Chairman John J. Duncan Jr. (R-Tenn.) introduced in December, authorizes the Corps to inspect levees that it built or maintains and others specified by state governors. It directs the Corps to publish a list of those levees and to promulgate safety guidelines.
