Fifty-eight Fortune 500 firms now call Texas home. The Lone Star State surpassed New York by three firms in the lastest ranking of the largest companies in the U.S., which is published by Fortune magazine, making Texas the leader in corporate headquarters.

Three of the top ten Fortune 500 firms hang their hats in Texas: ExxonMobil of Irving (No.2), ConocoPhllips of Houston (No.5) , and AT&T of San Antonio (No.10).

Four of the largest six corporations in Texas last year were oil companies, but the state's economy is more diverse than it was a generation ago, reports David Koening for BusinessWeek.

Fortune 500 firms in Texas with a connection to the A/E/C industry include Fluor Corp. of Irving and Halliburnton of Houston, as well as two of the nation's largest homebuilders, Centex of Dallas and D.R. Horton of Fort Worth.

Houston was home to the most Fortune 500 firms in Texas, followed by Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Irving. To see how the list breaks out by Texas city, click here.
