When Mark Callahan looks back on the arduous but successful seven-year effort of managing the project development and environment study for the $1.6-billion Wekiva Parkway, he gives credit to an unlikely group—environmentalists who once opposed it.

An entire city block in downtown New Orleans is being transformed into the Jung Hotel, a $130-million project with a $76-million construction tab.

Developers Carpenter & Co. and Woodward Design + Build are working with the city of New Orleans to redevelop the old World Trade Center into a 350-room Four Seasons Hotel, which will also have 76 condos.

Over the last three years, Baton Rouge-based Performance Contractors has steadily climbed up ENR Texas & Louisiana’s annual Top Contractors ranking, going from 19th in 2014 to 14th in 2015 and now up to No. 8 in 2016.

Regional contractors are poised for healthy growth in the years to come, with many firms projecting consistent construction demand following a steady performance in 2015 and the first half of 2016.

Downtown New Orleans is seeing an unprecedented amount of hotels under development and construction, Angela M. Latino-Geier says, with member firms experiencing a level of demand unseen in more than 20 years.

“There’s no shortage of construction projects in Houston,” Ben Johanneman says.
