Despite multiple scope changes and weather delays, the Hensel Phelps team successfully delivered a $93.5-million renovation and expansion in an active airport that processes nearly 50 million passengers annually.

Built to facilitate the smooth arrival and departure of thousands of passengers for two of the world’s largest cruise ships, the three-story 195,500-sq-ft terminal provides expansive views of the vessels from throughout the building.

Few doubted the need to replace the 70-year-old, low-level steel truss swing bridge spanning the Intracoastal Waterway. 

This 20,000-sq-ft collaborative learning facility, designed by Arquitectonica and built by Coastal Construction, features a large open floor plan that enables up to 130 students to use the building’s fabrications lab, workstations, presentation areas, review spaces and offices.

Just as construction was underway, the state instituted regulatory changes that forced a redesign of the original 183,000-sq-ft plan.

Two unstable tower cranes at the site of the New Orleans Hard Rock Hotel collapse were brought down on Oct. 20 in a controlled demolition, but work to stabilize the structure is far from over.
