Quality mental health care can be difficult to come by, particularly in mountain communities. This 28-bed healing center is providing a much-needed solution as the first such facility in the Vail Valley.
After the initial site review indicated that 7 ft of soil had to be brought in for structural reasons, the team designed a new system to mitigate the potential for settlement and ensure the final building would be stable for decades. This involved placing 368 vibrated aggregate piers. While this process could have extended the schedule by several weeks, careful resequencing efforts maintained the original schedule.
During the drilling and installation process for underground utilities, the local area was experiencing a 100-year snowfall. In addition to facing both record snowfall and freezing temperatures, all sitework had to be completed before the actual building could be submitted for permits. Although permitting typically takes place before construction, the team instead adapted the work sequence and used the time to provide constructibility reviews on all design elements to maximize time management once permits arrived.
