As the steel frame for a new performing arts center at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, Calif., emerged, Max Halberg, the CEO of Fox & Brand Marketing Co., was on site in June of last year to capture the moment. He recorded a shot of a welder at work with a Panasonic Lumix S5II with a Sigma 70-200 lens.
“To me, construction is the ultimate blend of precision and chaos—an environment full of movement, noise and grit, all working toward something permanent,” he says. “With this photo, I wanted to freeze one of those moments where that tension is most visible.”
Bernards is handing the construction of the 24,000-GSF complex, which will include an outdoor courtyard, a 262-seat theater, black box theater and backstage facilities. The project will target LEED Gold certification (Platinum preferred) and net-zero energy use to become an innovative case study for sustainability in the arts.
For Halberg, the photo shows that the performance has already begun. “There’s motion, grit and geometry all in one frame,” he says. “It just feels alive.”
