Award of Merit Health Care: Hampden Medical Center
Located on a 44-acre greenfield site, the $210-million, 300,000-sq-ft hospital was delivered in 26 months. The project team says that early engagement of design-assist subcontractors identified and resolved complexities ranging from wetlands and a major retaining wall to prefabricated panelized stud walls and curtain wall. The highly collaborative team expedited decision-making and provided budget reliability, allowing the project to break ground six months after the first design meeting.
Prefabrication helped maintain quality and consistency throughout construction while keeping pace with the demanding schedule and enhancing safety. Rooftop electrical rooms and bathroom pods were built at offsite shops, as was the 22-module central utility plant. It was put in place in just two months—a fraction of the originally planned six-month installation schedule.
