Located north of the library’s existing exterior wall, the 3,200-sq-ft addition creates space for children to learn, read and interact with parents and peers while preserving views of the neighboring Sweetwater River valley. The addition includes movable and static reading nooks to encourage exploration, and tiered west-facing windows brighten the space with indirect light. An outdoor patio encourages families to take their learning experience outside.
The addition also spurred a complete renovation of the existing 10,000-sq-ft library, expanding the main reading and book stack area and creating additional program space. The main reading room remodel opens up the large interior of the existing library and brightens the space with colorful floor finishes and wall graphics.
Four private study rooms were added that provide quiet areas for collaborative learning and teamwork. Two new study rooms connect via a partition and can be used separately or together. The team also created a larger computer area, a laptop checkout kiosk and a pair of digital book self-checkout stands. The result is a library that is easier to navigate and offers different experiences for patrons of various ages.
The project’s largest challenge was incorporating a single-occupant restroom in the addition even though existing restrooms and the sewer line were located at the opposite side of the existing library. The team added a pump adjacent to the building at the new point of connection. Collaboration with the owner produced a design that ensured adequate flow while staying on budget.
