The Robert W. Baker Integrated Operations Center is American Airlines’ combined American/US Airways operations hub. The 149,288-sq-ft building has two main floors but stands as tall as a four-story building. The building envelope can withstand an EF-3 tornado, or winds speeds up to 185 mph. Walker Engineering Inc. performed all electrical installations, including the electrical distribution system, emergency back-up power system, lighting and lighting controls. About 90% of the building area had raised floor space, which created unique coordination challenges among the trades. Rough-in and installation had to be managed between the under-floor, floor-level and overhead installations. In order to reduce trade stacking, off-hour schedules were implemented and BIM was used to detect clashes and mitigate scheduling problems with critical systems.
