Discovery Green earned LEED Gold Certification making it the first completed LEED Gold project for new construction in downtown Houston. The park project was initiated by Houston Mayor Bill White, who supported the development of the park through a public-private partnership between the city and the Discovery Green Conservancy, a non-profit organization that led the fundraising, design, building, construction and operations of the park. The North Texas Tollway Authority marked the opening of the newest portion of the Sam Rayburn Tollway, which fully opened to traffic in fall 2009. The NTTA opened the northern portion of Segment Three to traffic three months ahead of the completion date outlined in the authority’s project agreement with the Texas Dept. of Transportation. The southern portion opened Sept. 1, four months ahead of the completion date. The recently completed portion of NTTA’s Sam Rayburn Tollway. The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority amended a memorandum of agreement with San Jacinto College District and purchased about 3.56 acres of property near Barbours Cut Terminal. The MOA was entered into in October 2008 to pay costs of up to $150,000 to study the feasibility of improving this property in Morgan's Point in the vicinity of Barbours Cut, or potentially acquiring the property. Since that date, shoreline protection has been completed and both parties have agreed to cancel the MOA requirement to further improve the property. For $100 per share in cash and stock, Omaha-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc. acquired Fort-Worth based Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. in late fall.
