Gold: NREL Row 4 TurbinesSubmitted by The RMH Group Inc. Efficiencies in wind turbine technologies have dramatically increased over the years, thanks in large part to work performed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s National Wind Technology Center. NREL Row 4 Turbines Related Links: Back to Gold Hard Hat Awards SMA at Enterprise Park Achieving greater turbine efficiencies, primarily by limiting operational downtime, is critical for this sector’s continued growth. To study the problems associated with operational downtime and to develop methods for increasing efficiencies, NREL erected two new utility-scale turbines at the site—a 1.5-MW and a 2.3-MW wind turbine

Originally built in 1914, the historic Stratton Point building has housed a myriad of tenants over the past century. The Regional Transportation District broke ground in August on the $1-billion East Corridor commuter rail line, the largest single-rail project in the voter-approved FasTracks program. The Colorado Office of the State Architect awarded a design services contract for the $11.6-million Colorado State Capitol Dome Exterior Restoration Project to Lakewoods Martin/Martin Inc. The East Corridor is part of the FasTracks Eagle P3 project, a public-private partnership that also includes the Gold Line to Arvada and Wheat Ridge and a segment of the Northwest Rail Corridor to south Westminster. Hoover Dam, the Depression-era engineering marvel, turns 75 this month. While its new bridge crossing is set to open in November, the concrete monolith also is marking a dubious milestone this yeara 54-year low point for its water level, which threatens the dams hydroelectric output. Photo: Luetta Callaway As Hoover Dam celebrates its 75th anniversary, low Lake Mead water levels may lead to the eventual shutdown of the dams power-generating turbines. Lake Mead dipped to 1,085 ft in September, less than 40% of its capacity, following a decade of boom growth and drought. As a result, Hoover Dam may have
Commercial construction in Montana is as cool as the weather, and a warm-up is not expected in the near future. Contractors and architects that once specialized in large projects now find themselves bidding for medium-sized jobs. And given the increasing competition, those that once specialized in the medium-sized niche are now bidding for smaller projects. The State in General Business has been OK, and we are cautiously optimistic, says Russ Olsen, president of R&R Taylor Construction, Bozeman, which does work throughout the state. These days, we are spending a lot more time chasing work than we have in past years.
A four-year-long legal spat over Hoover Dam Bridge project's collapsed cableways has come to a close with a private settlement stemming from an April 20 arbitration ruling. On Sept. 15, 2006, a refurbished 42-year-old cableway system leased from American Bridge Co., Coraopolis, Penn., toppled over during 50-mph winds, bringing construction to a halt and delaying completion by two years. The 1,900-ft-long, 277-ft-deep twin-rib arched bridge will now open in early November.
