It's not often that designers get a chance to create a space for the people who make their designs a reality. In this project, Gensler teamed with Turner Construction to design a thoughtfully detailed and constructed office in a historic 1949 building. Located in Denver's vibrant Lower Downtown District, Turner's office has become not only a showcase for its craft but also a tool to demonstrate the company's strong, renewed presence in the Colorado and regional construction market. The new Residential Life Student Housing complex is at the south end of the Weber State University campus. Five residence halls were demolished to make way for its three buildings, which are three-level, above-grade steel-and-concrete, masonry-unit block structures, each with 40 to 60 units. They include lounges, gathering spaces, kitchenettes, work-out facilities, laundry rooms, meeting spaces, storage, building services areas, a convenience store and a commercial kitchen. The buildings form a quad in the center, where students can relax in front of a fire pit, enjoy beautifully landscaped walking paths or spend an afternoon at the sand volleyball court. Photo

The project completely renovated Wheeler Machinery's 45,000-sq-ft office building. Before the renovation, the 30-year-old structure was a dark, unrecognizable box and lacked a visual connection to the company's stability, strength and capabilities, says the submitter. Hughes General Contractors worked closely with Richardson Design Partnership to give the once bland and boring structure an upscale industrial feel. Bold concrete elements were added to the building's exterior. Inside, the design creates a welcoming, open feeling, says the team. The entire interior was gutted, and three floors were reconstructed to create new office space. Photo courtesy of Hughes General Contractors The entire interior
