ENR West June 2026 Snapshot: I-405/Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project

When completed, the I-405/Brickyard to SR 527 Improvement Project will upgrade four and a half miles of the corridor, primarily in Bothell, Wash., north of Bellevue.
The $834-million project is a collaboration between WSDOT, Sound Transit and design-build contractor Skanska USA Inc.
Josh Barrios, a senior environmental, health and safety manager for Skanska, captured a portion of the demolition earlier this year using his iPhone 16.
Several flyover ramps, loop ramps and bridges at the I-405/SR 522 interchange need to be removed to allow for two new bridges to be built.
As a safety manager, Barrios is often on site for such operations. “As someone who is in and around the jobsite daily, capturing a moment like this brings great pride and excitement for the work to come,” he says.
The project is expected to complete construction in 2028.
