Second Piece of Debris Falls Near New York City's George Washington Bridge
One person was hospitalized after debris fell onto a car on May 13.
All westbound lower-level lanes to the George Washington Bridge in New York City were closed after the debris fall over a westbound lane from the Cross-Bronx Expressway to I-95 in New Jersey.
For the second time in two weeks, debris fell onto a roadway near the George Washington Bridge in Manhattan—this time, during the May 13 morning commute, striking a vehicle and sending its passenger to the hospital, according to the New York City Fire Dept.
All westbound lanes to the lower level of the bridge heading to New Jersey were closed after the debris fell from the ceiling of a short tunnel on the span over a westbound lane of the Trans Manhattan Expressway that connects the Cross Bronx Expressway to the bridge, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherill posted on X.
“The Port Authority is investigating the incident and will undertake any necessary repairs immediately,” she wrote.
The Westbound lower level bridge lanes remained closed through the evening commute.
The latest incident, located near 179th Street and Wadsworth Avenue, comes one week after a large piece of debris fell from a tunnel ceiling on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway near the entrance to the bridge's upper level. That debris narrowly missed the car of John Toledo, a city Dept. of Environmental Protection worker who recorded the incident on his dashboard camera and posted the footage on Reddit, writing that he is “lucky to be alive.”
Officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey later said the debris material that fell near Toledo's car consisted mostly of dust and light materials. After inspecting the ceiling panels the Port Authority said the problem was resolved.
