Multiple commingled student programs at Tooele Tech now have their own space. An extensive campus upgrade and expansion added 38,400 sq ft of new building space, 23,500 sq ft of renovated space and a new outdoor commercial driver’s license training range. Classroom and training spaces now more closely reflect the real-world layouts of professional work environments, helping students graduate more prepared to enter their chosen career path.
It wasn’t until after the project was awarded that the team learned students would not be relocated during construction. Since students would continue attending classes, the project team worked with the college to identify five primary work phases and four smaller subphases.
Although phases were added to the project, there was no additional time added to the schedule, and construction did not interrupt campus activities. Adjusting to a phased approach significantly changed the original utility installation plan.
Instead of one simple continuous installation throughout the entire campus, crews either preserved back-up systems that kept critical utilities running while upgrades were being made or made critical switchovers during late or overnight hours.
