Thornton, Colo., is the new home of a 529,000-sq-ft cold storage food distribution center that features a 107,700-sq-ft freezer along with multiple cold storage areas, office spaces and general assembly area. To ensure temperature zones could be precisely controlled at anywhere from -15°F to 55°F, crews installed specially insulated walls to separate each zone, which initially created some challenges when it came to electrical penetrations.
When construction began, a 13-month project schedule was going to make achieving the timeline difficult. Weifield worked with the owner and contractor to explain how the project could be accelerated by moving portions of electrical work forward. The Weifield team went on to lead the schedule and set execution deadlines for each phase. However, because of this resequencing, the electrical scope of work was set to increase dramatically between June and August 2024.
Although facilities of this scale would typically require upward of 150 electricians to complete work on an accelerated schedule, Weifield’s team maxed out at 80 crew members. To get ahead of the schedule, crews broke down each phase into smaller parts and implemented aggressive deadlines, and another project manager was brought in to drive the low voltage scope. Using BIM and VDC, the team modeled the entire building from the inside out. Weifield’s team also designed and built all the cages that support underground services, large overhead pipe bends and rigid stub ups.
