The $237-million staging complex will serve as an import, storage, pre-assembly and loadout facility for wind turbine generator components to support offshore renewable energy projects.
The three-year effort included constructing two heavy-lift berths for generator deliveries and load-outs as well as a third for handling steel tube monopiles. These facilities required strengthening upland soils and surfaces to accommodate heavy surface loadings from cranes and self-propelled modular transporters.
The team drove more than 1,300 250-ft-long piles and poured 26,500 cu yd of concrete. The team also installed high-mast lighting, stormwater collection systems and other ancillary structures and systems.
Teamwide communication and collaboration helped tackle significant threats to meeting key deadlines, including unforeseen buried rip rap, bulkhead replacements and obstructions to pile-driving work. Approximately 300,000 tons of crushed concrete and asphalt millings were reused for the project, which was completed on time and at budget.
