I-75 in Oakland County, Mich., is a critical economic and travel corridor, serving 175,000 vehicles daily. Segment 3 of the $1.45-billion modernization project rebuilt 5.5 miles between Hazel Park, Royal Oak and Madison Heights—adding Michigan’s first high occupancy vehicle lanes, replacing 24 bridges, improving interchanges and constructing a four-mile stormwater tunnel.
The project boosted safety, reduced congestion and strengthened the region’s economic competitiveness. Delivered through a design-build-finance-maintain model, it overcame major challenges—most notably rescuing a stalled tunnel-boring machine—through rapid problem-solving and collaboration.

A robust safety program, including orientation for 2,400 workers, daily inspections and weekly audits, helped achieve an injury rate 45% below the industry average.

The owner and design-builder exemplified teamwork through a co-located office and consistent staffing. Segment 3 now ensures safer, more efficient travel for business, commuters and tourists alike.
