In addition to a 14,803-sq-ft fire station, this $23-million project’s scope included a fueling station for all city vehicles and the city’s second street sweeper dump, all located in a single 15-acre site. It’s also one of the city’s largest fire department facilities.
Extensive BIM use helped to precisely coordinate complex overhead mechanical, fire suppression and electrical systems, which proved vital in maintaining generous ceiling heights in critical areas and avoiding costly field conflicts. This is the city’s first fire station to eliminate evaporative coolers in favor of fully electric cooling to support long-term energy goals despite the challenge of increased rooftop mechanical needs.
Late in the project, it became clear that the original design for the sweeper dump did not adequately meet the city’s operational needs. This led to a three- to four-month pause in construction activities in that area while work on the fire station continued. Redesigning the sweeper dump required additional underground utilities, which needed to be carefully integrated with the already installed infrastructure. A collaborative effort resulted in a revised solution that aligned with the city’s functional requirements while staying within budget constraints.
The street sweeper dump area consists of approximately 1.6 acres of reinforced concrete pavement and includes wash wells for vehicle cleaning and concrete site walls for debris containment.
