Downtown Los Angeles was a hive of early morning activity in March when crews completed a massive concrete pour for the Frank Gehry-designed Colburn Center. Between 2:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., crews placed 240 cu yd of concrete from a trio of boom pumps.
Photographer Shayleen Osborn said she used a Sony Alpha 1 camera to capture the precise coordination of the operation.
“I wanted to highlight the scale of the operation and the dedication of the crew working under the lights—there’s a real sense of momentum and pride in moments like this,” she says.
The work is part of a 100,000-sq-ft expansion adjacent to Colburn School of Performing Arts’ downtown campus being built by McCarthy Building Cos.
When completed in 2027, the $337-million project will feature a 17,200-sq-ft concert hall featuring an orchestra pit and a stage that can accommodate large-scale works as well as a 100-seat theater for dance and four professional-size studios for dance instruction and rehearsal.
