The addition of 92 beds and more than 91,000 sq ft of space significantly increases Cape Fear Valley Medical Center’s inpatient capacity and helps alleviate emergency department delays. Strategic construction phasing was required to add the two new floors directly above one of the nation’s busiest emergency departments and adjacent to high-traffic emergency and main hospital entrances.
A target-value design approach helped maintain budget alignment during a period of market volatility. Key design-assist subcontractors were onboarded early to collaborate with the design team, facilitating timely design decisions and early procurement of critical materials.
Extensive use of offsite prefabrication helped improve project quality and efficiency, while the reduced daily jobsite population benefited both worker safety and hospital operations. Prefabricated components included the exterior skin, patient room headwalls, bathroom pods, electric rooms and overhead MEP racks.
Additionally, the assembling of racks, wall panels and electric rooms locally supported the regional economy and facilitated easier warehouse site visits for quality inspections.
Helipads on the addition’s expanded rooftop that accommodate both standard and military helicopters are the first in the nation to implement a primary water-only fire suppression system, a safer alternative to traditional foam systems linked to cancer risks.
