Texas & Southeast Snapshot: August 2025

In August of 2023, Bechtel began construction of NASA’s Mobile Launcher 2, with the company leading design, building, testing and eventual commissioning of the new ground platform structure that will be used to support the Block 1B variant of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which will carry the Orion spacecraft, four astronauts and their support equipment to the moon.
To promote safety and efficiency, Bechtel is assembling the base of Mobile Launcher 2 at the ML2 Parksite—located by the Vehicle Assembly Building—and is constructing the tower near NASA headquarters at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
This photo, taken February 2024 during a lift operation at the Parksite, shows a Bechtel worker assisting with the precise placement of a steel beam as the contractor builds out the base of the mobile launcher.
