By becoming fully integrated with the community, the project team made the challenges of building a $7.9-million, 34,000-sq-ft middle school on an active campus easier as well as more enjoyable. While a new structural-steel frame was erected during the school’s summer vacation, subsequent construction and demolition activity was carefully synchronized to prevent interference with the school’s daily schedule. The absence of laydown space required precise scheduling of deliveries around peak traffic hours, while temporary pathways ensured a safe and operational environment for students and visitors.

Throughout the 15-month construction phase, project team members hosted regularly scheduled tours for students, staff and community members. A partnership with the school’s innovative learning program helped select students better understand the intricacies of construction, equipment and materials. St. David’s students returned the favor, regularly treating field staff members to thank you notes, Valentine’s Day gifts and snacks.
