Contract Awarded for Construction of Fulton Street Transit Center
A contract for the above and below-grade construction of the $176 million, 180,000-sq-ft, Fulton Street Transit Center has been awarded to Plaza Construction of New York who will serve as the General Contractor along with Schiavone Construction of Secaucus, New Jersey.
Construction on the center which is said to modernize this major Manhattan subway complex began in December 2008 but Plaza Construction�s work isn�t scheduled to begin until this coming February following the erection of a tower crane in January. The scope of the project includes the complete building enclosure from the existing street level foundation through the roof.
Designed by New York-based Grimshaw Architects, the fa�ade of the center is made up of structural steel and glass topped with an oval-shaped oculus that is to be the focal point of the space, resembling stained-glass windows in a traditional cathedral. The interior of the center is also comprised of structural steel, glass storefronts, as well as stainless steel panels, glass-fibre reinforced concrete column covers and ceilings, granite flooring and decorated with a cable net structure and reflective artwork panels.
The design also includes spiral stairs, elevators and escalators which will transport passengers between the A, C, 4 and 5 subway lines with connections to the 2, 3, J and Z lines.
The Fulton Street Transit Center is scheduled to open in 2014.
