MBI Group, a New York City based full-service, minority-certified, general contracting and construction management firm, has been awarded a School Construction Authority contract to renovate Manhattan’s P.S. 42 at 71 Hester Street.

An SCA, MBE-certified general contractor, MBI Group will work closely with the agency to coordinate the facility’s demolition and re-construction. The 50,000-sq-ft, six floor renovation will include new flooring and fresh paint throughout the entire building . Riser work will be performed from the basement to the top floor with new power outlets installed in the classrooms as well as the replacement of the 50 year old interior doors on the first floor, with new hollow metal doors and hardware in order to ensure that the school is as secure as possible for both the students and the staff. The demolition of the first floor’s flooring, subflooring and concrete fill is also part of the project scope.

The main challenge of the project wasthe tight schedule and logistical approach that have been situated so as to avoid disrupting the start of the Fall 2009 school year. Construction on the P.S. 42 renovation was supervised by MBI Group’s Daniel Blackall, Senior Project Director and John Prendergast, Senior Project Supervisor and began in July 2009. It is expected to be completed by August 2010.
