Leading on All Fronts: How Turner Construction Is Building the Next Generation of Field Leaders [NCCER Case Study]
Turner Construction utilized NCCER’s Construction Foreman Certification Program to scale up field leadership training and improve foreman performance at a large-scale project.
With large-scale megaprojects becoming more common, demand for capable foremen is rapidly growing. To help scale up and standardize their field leadership training, Turner Construction has utilized NCCER’s Construction Foreman Certification Program as their developmental foundation.
Implementing the program at a $5 billion project near Kansas City, Turner certified 40 foremen and saw trackable improvement in their performance through application of the skills and strategies learned in the coursework.
With the clear return on investment, Turner trades manager Rob Cooper plans to expand use of the Construction Foreman Certification Program at other Turner project sites:
“This is something I plan on using every single time I go to a different jobsite and have foremen that need training. I plan on implementing this every single place we go.”
A State of Opportunity: North Carolina’s Approach to Construction Workforce Development [NCCER Case Study]
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is utilizing NCCER to expand construction skill development in high schools throughout the state, helping support the needs of local industry and providing valuable career paths for students.
With a growing industrial labor shortage and skills gap in North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) identified the need to infuse the state’s education system with technical skills development.
Utilizing NCCER’s craft curricula, credentialing and other resources, NCDPI has systematically integrated construction education into more than 200 high school programs throughout North Carolina, resulting in hundreds of thousands of unique industry credentials being earned by students annually.
Along with helping to meet the needs of the state’s industry, NCDPI and NCCER are also opening doors for students to construction careers that are high paying, in high demand and can support their future success. Nolan Fahrer, NCDPI’s Trade Education Consultant and state NCCER director, explains:
“Students are seeing the value in the trades again. They’re starting to see these as viable careers, and that is starting to help build the career pipeline.”
