For its commitment to employees and culture, in addition to a strong portfolio of projects and record-breaking backlog, Haydon Building Corp. has been named ENR Southwest’s 2021 Contractor of the Year.

The Phoenix-based firm had doubled its revenue over the past three years, from about $150 million in 2017 to nearly $300 million in 2020. Haydon serves the commercial building, heavy civil, landscape and virtual construction sectors, providing construction management at risk, design-build and general contracting services for both the public and private sectors.

Haydon has grown to over 450 employees and also is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021.

Nearly two years into a complete culture overhaul for the firm, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, which required its leadership to adapt quickly to maintain momentum.

Katie Haydon Perry, who is transitioning into the job as president of the company over the next two years, led Haydon’s leadership team to execute the largest culture “power cycle” in the midst of uncertainty, keeping its people at the center of a new growth strategy.

Current projects include the $60-million Legacy Sports Complex Athletic Fields & Infrastructure in Mesa, Ariz., and the $100-million Hance Park Revitalization in Phoenix. Haydon also is building the $35-million Banner Aspera Medical Office Building in Glendale, Ariz., as well as the $22-million Lindsay Road & SR202L Freeway Traffic Interchange in Gilbert, Ariz.

As a result of its rapid growth, Haydon was named the 2020 Phoenix Business Journal Arizona Corporate Excellence Award Rookie of the Year and was also featured as one of the top 100 Places to Work in Arizona in 2021 by AzBusiness magazine.
