Almost 40 years ago, McCarthy Building Companies opened its first California office in Newport Beach. Project Manager Frank Pasztor, who would later become the company's Southern California Division's vice president of operations, recalled arriving in a pickup truck not knowing anyone. But the McCarthy marketing team had already started planting the seeds of success.

"That marketing effort did a great job in researching the territory, and gave us opportunities to move forward," he recalled in the history of the company, "The Legend of McCarthy."

Today, the firm has six offices in the Golden State and saw $2.3 billion in revenues in 2022, a 32% increase over the year prior. McCarthy has seen an increase of sales volume in several key markets: healthcare, commercial, education and parking structures – all of which have shown remarkable growth on the West Coast recently.

The company attributes its recent success in the region to three main factors; innovation in the areas of virtual design and construction; integrating the latest technology with preconstruction services and lastly, utilizing prefabrication and modular construction on projects. Those factors have led to McCarthy being named ENR California’s 2023 Contractor of the Year.

Some of McCarthy's premier recent projects in California include:

  • Loma Linda Medical Center's Campus Transformation project which was a 2022 ENR Best Projects regional winner. The 17-story adult patients tower and 10-story children’s patients tower provide 480 new patient beds to serve Southern California’s greater inland empire community.
  • Shoe manufacturer Skechers’ Corporate Headquarters, a LEED Gold certified, multi-building campus covering just over 330,000 sq ft in Manhattan Beach.
  • A pair of major student housing projects for the California State University system: The CSU Los Angeles Student Housing East; a 380,000-gross-sq-ft, 7-story student housing facility, and the CSU Long Beach Parkside North Housing project; a 90,000-sq-ft, four-story housing building that includes 472 beds, pod study rooms, kitchens and community space
