Three of the largest toll agencies in the U.S. released new data recently that demonstrating that the number of traffic accidents at open road tolling (or ORT) plazas is significantly less than that at traditional toll plazas. “From the data that we have on the toll roads Texas Dept. of Transportation operates, open-road tolling facilities have far fewer traffic accidents,” Karen Amacker, TxDOT spokesperson, tells Texas Construction. The Port Commission of The Port of Houston Authority recently authorized the sale of $235 million in unlimited tax refunding bonds and approved the 2010 operating budget. The commission also approved awarding a contract to Houston-based Republic Services/BFI Waste Systems to provide trash disposal and recycling services for the Turning Basin, Barbours Cut and Woodhouse terminals and the Fireboat barracks for a two-year term for $2.2 million. The Ronald McDonald House of Dallas recently dedicated its new 60,000-sq-ft space designed by HKS Architects. HKS Architects, HKS Commercial Interiors and Hill & Wilkinson General Contractors provided reduced fees for services. The team also secured in-kind donations totaling more than $1 million to help defray the cost of the building. Around The Clock Freightliner Group LLC opened a new 200,308-sq-ft facility along IH- 20 in south Dallas recently. Arlington-based Bob Moore Construction was the general contractor and Oklahoma City-based Fitzgerald & Associates was the architect. The new ATC facility includes a freightliner office, service area, retail store and warehouse.
