Heavy equipment owners make their living and help sustain our economy with machines that some consider environmentally irresponsible. It’s a harsh judgment that becomes less accurate every day. Encouraging businesses to be “green” and shoulder financial implications that accompany those efforts can stir emotions. The 1990s may have brought on skyrocketing construction volume, but they produced an unprecedented level of construction defect litigation. That was the era when premiums began to go up -- and carriers began to get out. Unfortunately, many small and mid-size contractors still struggle to find ways to insure projects that have a higher-than-normal liability. In the past couple of years, however, a growing number of them have found relief through the use of
To paraphrase a valued client, “A contractor without a bond really isn’t a contractor.” Bonds certainly allow for the performance of governmental work and opportunities for private work. A payment bond is intended to ensure payment to subcontractors and suppliers. A performance bond generally guarantees the completion of a contract if a contractor defaults.
