The New York City Economic Development Corporation recently announced that it has received 29 responses to its Request for Qualifications for groups interested in redeveloping the 62-acre Willets Point District in Queens, New York. The responses came from a variety of commercial, residential and mixed-use developers from across the United States. From the 29 responses, NYCEDC will develop a short list to receive a future Request for Proposals. Construction employment in New York City is expected to drop by 8.3% this year, but, according to a report from the New York Building Congress released in late-October, that number represents a significant shift from last year’s doomsday prediction.The Building Congress’ annual Construction Outlook predicts that despite a 20% drop in construction spending for 2009 – down to $25.8 billion from $32.4 billion in 2008 – the number of jobs lost this year will top out around 11,000. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein have announced that 23 new school buildings with more than 13,000 seats will open at the start of the 2009-10 school year. This new construction, along with the 18 new buildings that opened last year, represents the most-ever new classroom seats to come on line in a two-year period since the School Construction Authority was created in 1988. Three months after being acquired by U.K.-based construction giant Balfour Beatty, Parsons Brinckerhoff looked inside the organization for its new leader. George J. Pierson, a three-year veteran with PB, was named the company’s Chief Executive Officer in early December. He will assume the role after the first of the year.
